Coles gets lone Greco-Roman victory at Pan-Am Olympic Qualifier

March 13, 2020

OTTAWA – Daniel Coles had the lone victory during Greco-Roman competition on the first day of the Pan-American Olympic Qualification Tournament in Ottawa.

Coles, of the Western Wrestling Club, won the 67 kg qualifying round 7-1 over Nilton Gonzalo Marcos Soto Garcia of Peru.

In the quarterfinal, the 20-year-old was unable to advance and fell 10-2 to Manuel Alejandro Lopez Salcedo of Mexico.

To qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, wrestlers need to finish in the top two in their weight-class.

Spectators were not permitted in the Shaw Centre as a preventative measure to minimize the risk of spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Five other Canadians competed today, but were unable to win their matches.

Adam MacFadyen competed at 60 kg, John Yeats at 77 kg, Ioannis Narlidis at 87 kg, Thomas Barreiro at 97 kg, and Brad Hildenbrandt wrestled at 130 kg.

The Pan-American Olympic Qualification Tournament is currently slated to continue Saturday with women’s freestyle, and Sunday with men’s freestyle. Preliminary sessions begin at 10:30 am in Ottawa.
